3-arm "T" brackets are typically used to split one wall of a pergola into two sections , either to a) decrease the distance each privacy wall slat spans (to prevent sagging) or b) create a "doorway" in the wall (i.e. one section of the wall has a privacy wall but the other side doesn't).
